HOW TO BE AN EXCELLENT RELIEF EARLY YEARS EDUCATOR

how to be a great ecy eduator

Great relief educators are confident, flexible and happy to adapt to new environments.  Here are the top qualities and industry tips for becoming an excellent early years educator!

GENERAL

  • FRIENDLY – one of the most important qualities of a great childcare worker is friendliness, remember to say hello, smile and be welcoming.
  • SENSE OF HUMOUR – applying a sense of humour to challenging situations can create a positive environment.
  • PATIENCE – Leave all frustration and anger at the front door, as working in childcare means short attention spans, lack of self-control and repetition.  Patience is a virtue and will help you deal with the daily demands of childcare.
  • A GENUINE ENTHUSIASM FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN – to succeed, you must want to make a difference to every child, motivate then in their learning journey and help them overcome any obstacles and challenges they face.
  • GREAT COMMUNICATION SKILLS – effective communication at all levels is essential.  An ability to communicate with the children, with other childcare workers and with parents is a guaranteed route to success.

AT THE CHILDCARE CENTRE

  • GET THERE EARLY – by arriving early you can familiarise yourself with the Centre’s policies, routines, layout and any expectations for the day.  Always speak to the Centre Manger or 2IC on arrival and prior to leaving.  AND call US if you are running late!
  • FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT – be helpful, happy and respectful.  Be well-presented and appropriately dressed and make a point of introducing yourself to other staff.  Leaving a positive impression will increase the opportunity of future placements.
  • GO ABOVE AND BEYOND – as a priority, you must find out where you fit in the centre’s plan for the day.  There almost, always will be a plan.  If there is, jump straight in, use your initiative and become a valuable part of the team.
  • BE NEAT AND TIDY – every little bit helps, make sure you tidy up each areas as you go, as the next person to use it will appreciate your efforts.
  • BE UP TO DATE WITH EYLF AND NQS – it is important that you have a thorough understanding of the early years framework and quality standards.  This will allow you to slot straight into the centre’s schedule and ensure the management have confidence in your abilities.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD RELIEF TEACHER GREAT?

Relief Teacher

In general, great relief teachers are confident, flexible, happy to work in different environments and have a willingness to travel.

There are, however, some practical tips to help make relief teaching a successful and satisfying experience for everyone involved.

AT SCHOOL

GET THERE EARLY –by arriving early you can familiarise yourself with the school’s behavioural policy, staff toilets, tea and coffee facilities, where you can prepare resources, the timetable for the day and any class rules. If possible arrive in time for the morning briefing, leave after the children and always speak to head/deputy prior to leaving. AND call us if you are running late!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT – be helpful, happy and respectful. Be well presented and appropriately dressed and make a point of introducing yourself to other teachers and staff. Leaving a positive impression will increase the opportunity of future placements.

ALWAYS FOLLOW THE PRE-SET TEACHING PLAN – as a priority you must find out if there is pre-set work for the class. There almost, always will be. If there is, it is vital that you follow that plan, to keep the pupils on track and maintain continuity in their learning journey. It is also important to have some back up teaching ideas prepared, just in case you need them.

BE FOCUSSED ON THE PUPILS – make yourself aware of any children with particular needs and find out about the daily classroom routines. Sticking to their routine will reassure the pupils and make the teaching transition easier.

LEAVE THE CLASSROOM NEAT AND TIDY – every little bit helps, and the next person to use the classroom will appreciate your efforts.

DIFFERENT SCHOOLS, DIFFERENT WAYS – every school works in it’s own way, you may have to adjust your teaching style to suit the school. Be aware of different classroom management styles and adapt your teaching methods to match.

A FEW THINGS NOT TO DO

* Don’t leave the school grounds during your placement.

* Don’t leave your class unattended.

* Don’t be late.

* Don’t forget to smile!

WITH US

REMEMBER, if you are in a school through Class Professionals you can’t work for that school direct.  Future bookings MUST come via us.  If requested by a member of the school administration just pass them onto us and we will happily make the booking for them.

EDUCATION EMPLOYMENT AGENCY MYTHS DEBUNKED

Myth and facts

I WILL BE CHARGED MONEY TO WORK WITH YOUR AGENCY
Class Professionals never charge a candidate a fee for work. We are engaged by schools and childcare centres to fill job openings and are paid by them to find and secure top quality staff. There is no cost to you when you register with, or are hired to fill a position.

EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES CAN'T FIND YOU A PERMANENT JOB JUST DAY TO DAY RELIEF POSITIONS
A large percentage of our business involves filling relief positions on a day to day basis, however, we also fill short-term, long-term and permanent positions across all education job roles and have a successful track record of placing existing candidates in long term, part-time and full-time jobs.

IF YOU SIGN WITH AN AGENCY YOU CAN'T WORK WITH ANY SCHOOLS OR CHILDCARE CENTRES DIRECT
This is untrue. The only schools and childcare centres you can’t work for direct are the ones we have previously placed you in. You can approach and work for any other organisation direct without any involvement from Class Professionals. Any school or childcare centre we have sent you to must abide by a 12 month lock in period before hiring you direct, alternatively they can pay a buy-out fee and put you on their payroll.

YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE ALL OF THE TIME TO BE OFFERED WORK
One of the great benefits of working for an agency is the freedom and flexibility to work where and when you want. You are in control of your availability and can pick and choose the days and areas you would like to work. This will not affect your standing with us or reduce you eligibility for work.

YOU WON'T BE PAID AS MUCH WORKING FOR AN AGENCY
If we place you in a government school you will be paid by the Department of Education in line with your current pay level. Private school placements are paid on a flat hourly rate applicable for all levels of position and childcare staff are paid hourly dependent on the level of the position.

I CAN'T USE AGENCY WORK ON MY RESUME
Long term unemployment can look bad on your resume, noting that you worked for an agency shows determination to learn new skills, make new connections and show flexibility.

YOU CAN'T BE REGISTERED WITH MORE THAN ONE AGENCY
There are no legal restrictions on the number of agencies you register with. However, being loyal to Class Professionals will definitely improve your standing and increase your job opportunities in the quieter months.

EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES ARE ONLY GOOD FOR ENTRY LEVEL JOBS
At Class Professionals we specialise in education and childcare and recruit for all levels and roles including executive positions.
